The Big Dig Archaeological Site must be one of Sydney’s most interesting, unknown places to visit.
The Site is located between Cumberland and Gloucester Streets in The Rocks. It consists of an area of land that was disturbed during the construction of a new YHA building. During construction of the new building builders uncovered the foundations of buildings that had been demolished in the early 1900’s (due to a plague outbreak) and the remains covered up.
The foundations of over 30 buildings (including homes and shops) have been uncovered along with 100’s of thousands of artifacts.
The site is now considered to be one of Sydney’s most important archaeological sites.
The construction of the YHA building continued, however part of it was raised on piles so as to preserve the foundations of the old buildings. Along with the foundations, artifacts were also unearthed some of which are now housed in displays on site.
Information regarding the areas is well displayed on boards and through signage. There is also an education centre on site.
If you enjoy history then this is a must visit.
