Sexton Cottage, once used for laying out bodies prior to burial, was restored and turned into a museum in 1984. In 2017 it underwent a major renovation.
Sexton Cottage is located within St Thomas Rest Park. St Thomas Cemetery was the first burial ground established on the north side of the harbour. Although now converted into a Rest Park, elements of the original mid-nineteenth century cemetery remain. For example the elaborate stone and iron gates and fence that still stand were designed by the church wardens from pattern books in 1883.
The best way to explore the rest park is via a self-guided walking map . You may also wish to refer to the St Thomas Rest Park – Sailors, soldiers and civil servants guide.
Today attractions in the museum include a striking reproduction mourning dress and mourning jewellery. Also included in the museum are copies of the Burial Register of St Thomas Cemetary.
Note: the museum is closed in January.
