Sydney Chinatown is a great place to immerse yourself in Australian Chinese culture. Currently located in and around Dixon street, this is actually the third area in Sydney to be known as ‘Chinatown’. Located here since the 1920’s, Chinatown is now a bustling part of Sydney where visitors can enjoy Chinese food and wares, hairdressers, restaurants, cake shops and all sort of knick knack shops.
Key (and free or low cost) attractions include:
Dixon Street – part of Dixon Street is a pedestrian only mall. You will know you have found it when you see one of its two Paifangs (one at the Goulburn Street end and one at Hay Street end). This area is considered to be the main section of Chinatown and includes some of its best architecture and eateries
Chinatown Night market – these are held every Friday from 4.00pm to 11.00pm. Here you can buy a huge array of street food and goods from more than 50 stalls
Digital walking tour – download a copy of the digital walking tour to help you get around the area
Chinese Story Tellers – find these narrators at 280 Pitt Street Sydney and hear about life of early Chinese immigrants
Chinese New Year celebrations – visitors and locals alike flock to Chinatown to celebrate Chinese New Year. Held on a different date each year, this celebration is the largest holiday festival in the Chinese calendar
In Between Two Worlds – a magical street art installation by Jason Wing.
Make sure to also check out the Chinese Gardens of Friendship.
